The Three Degrees
Craft Freemasonry is a journey taken in three symbolic stages. Each degree represents a step in personal development, using the tools of the ancient stonemasons to teach lessons of integrity, growth, and duty.
Entered Apprentice
The first degree is the candidate’s introduction to the Lodge. It focuses on the foundations of character—moral awareness, honesty, and the equality of all people. It teaches that we are all “rough ashlar” stones, requiring work and discipline to become part of a greater structure.
Fellowcraft
The second degree represents the period of learning and enlightenment. It encourages the Freemason to explore the arts, sciences, and his own intellectual development. This stage is about applying your skills to the service of the community and finding balance in life.
Master Mason
The final and most profound degree. It deals with the human condition, legacy, and mortality. Becoming a Master Mason marks the completion of the basic journey, granting the member full privileges within the Lodge and the right to visit Lodges across the globe.
Beyond the Ritual
These degrees are not academic tests; they are shared experiences. They offer a unique way to reflect on how we live our lives and how we treat those around us. Once a man has attained the degree of a Master Mason, his true journey in the Craft has only just begun.
