What is Freemasonry?

Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest and most respected fraternal organisations. At its core, it’s about building character, forming lasting friendships, and making a positive difference — both in ourselves and in our communities.

Freemasons meet in Lodges like Ashley Hill Lodge No. 7861 to share in a centuries-old tradition of learning, reflection, and mutual respect. Although our ceremonies are symbolic and rooted in history, our purpose is very much modern: to become better men and better citizens.

We do this by living according to three guiding principles:

Integrity

Freemasons strive to be honest, reliable, and fair in everything we do — both in the lodge and in everyday life.

Friendship

Lodge meetings bring people together from all backgrounds, forming genuine bonds that often last a lifetime. There’s a strong sense of belonging and mutual support.

Charity

We are committed to helping those in need. This includes raising funds for local and national charities, supporting fellow members, and giving back to our community.

Tradition and Progress

Freemasonry is built on history, but it’s not stuck in the past. We honour our traditions while always looking to the future — welcoming new members who want to take part in something meaningful.

Whether you’re simply curious or actively thinking about joining, we’d be glad to talk. There’s no pressure and no obligation — just an open door.
